Turrets are the only defenders that never log off. They're also the most misunderstood structure in ARK: most "turret walls" that look terrifying die to one patient Stego because the geometry, settings, and ammo behind them were wrong. This guide covers what to place, where, and how to keep it fed.
Turret types and what they're for

The classic composition is a heavy-dominant wall with tek turrets covering the last approach and plant X sprinkled for the debuffs. Autos fill budget gaps early; replace them as ingots allow.
The turret limit changes everything
Official servers cap turrets in an area (the well-known limit is 100 within a ~33m radius; unofficials configure their own). Two consequences:
- You can't solve defense with quantity. Past the cap, more turrets do nothing — placement quality is the only scaling left.
- Spread clusters deliberately. Serious bases run several distinct turret clusters just outside each other's limit radius, so an attacker who drains one zone walks into a fresh one.

Placement geometry: the part that actually stops raids
- Overlapping fields of fire. Any point an attacker can stand should be hit by multiple turret groups. Soakers beat isolated turrets one at a time; they melt when three angles fire simultaneously.
- Mix heights. Ground-level turrets die to terrain cover; roof and tower turrets die to cliff angles. Combined, each covers the other's blind spots. Cliff-face and underside placements catch the approaches nobody scouts.
- Deny the soak angle. Stegos soak best walking straight into a flat wall of fire. Angle clusters so soakers take side-on fire (their weak profile) no matter the approach line.
- Cover your own doors and roof. More bases die through a turret-free roof or a "temporary" side door than through the front wall.
- Internal turrets are the second wall. A breach should put raiders in front of a second, uncontested field of fire. Interior heavies above the vault room punish anyone who makes it through.
Settings that decide fights
Turret targeting settings aren't cosmetic:
- Players and Tames vs Survivors Only: perimeter turrets generally run all-targets; specialized anti-personnel clusters (survivors only) refuse to waste bullets on soakers and shred the riders and C4-runners instead. A mixed wall — some all-target, some survivor-only — is the standard answer to soak crews.
- Range settings control engagement distance; low-range interior turrets conserve ammo for point-blank breaches.
- Warning: all-low-range walls invite rocket sniping from outside engagement distance. Keep some long-range coverage.
Ammo economy: the invisible half
A turret without deep ammo is a decoy. Treating ammo as an economy:
- Fill depth beats turret count. Fifty heavies with full bins outlast a hundred at 10%.
- Craft continuously. Standing orders: metal and paste flow into bullets every day, not just after raids.
- Refill before logging off — the offline window is when the bins get tested.
- Watch drain via tribe log. Turret kills and unexplained ammo loss are probing raids; instant alerts (Discord webhooks or the desktop app) turn probes into prep time.
The maintenance loop
- Daily: top off bins, repair chip damage, check generator fuel (dual generators, separated — one grenade shouldn't dark your wall).
- Weekly: walk the perimeter as an attacker; fly every approach and look for new blind angles (terrain changes, decayed neighbor structures open new lines).
- After every defense: read the log — which cluster drained, which angle they chose — and patch that geometry, not just the wall.
Common fatal mistakes
- The pretty wall: turrets in a flat line at one height — a soaker buffet.
- All-in on one cluster: one drained zone = naked base. Layer zones.
- No survivor-only turrets: soak crews walk their C4-runner in behind the Stego uncontested.
- Generator in an outer room: power dies before the wall does.
- Set-and-forget: the wall that stopped last month's raid is the wall this month's raid was planned against.

FAQ
How many turrets is "enough"?
Enough that draining the approach cluster costs more soak armor and time than your loot is worth — on official that means building to the area cap with layered zones, full bins, and mixed targeting. Under-capped walls aren't budget versions; they're donations.
Heavies everywhere, or mix in autos?
Heavies where soakers will walk, always. Autos are acceptable early-game filler and fine for anti-personnel duty, but a heavy-short soak lane is the single most exploited weakness on official.
Do plant X really matter?
Yes — not for damage, but because slow/blind stacks with bullet damage and costs fertilizer instead of ingots. They're the cheapest way to make a soak take 30% longer, which is often the difference between "drained before dawn" and "defenders logged in."
