Cryopods & Server Transfers in ASA PvP: Armies in Your Pocket

Two systems quietly define large-scale ARK PvP: cryopods, which compress a war herd into a hotbar, and server transfers, which move that hotbar across an entire cluster. Together they turn every server on your network into both a target and a staging ground. Understanding the mechanics — and their limits — is mandatory before you fight tribes who do.

Cryopods in sixty seconds

A cryopod freezes a dino into a pocketable item. Throw it to deploy the dino back into the world.

  • Charge: pods hold limited charge and decay over time; a cryofridge keeps stored pods topped up. A dead pod means a lost dino — fridge discipline is dino insurance.
  • Cryo sickness: rapid-deploying dinos in PvP conditions applies sickness — the dino comes out unconscious or weakened, exact behavior depending on ruleset and current patch. The design goal is stopping instant mid-fight army drops; unofficial servers often tune or disable it.
  • What fits: most tames pod normally; some giant or special creatures are excluded. Baby dinos and imprint timers interact with pods differently across patches — test on *your* server before you pod a half-raised war line.

The pod meta

Cryopods changed base design and war logistics permanently:

  • Pocket armies. A raid squad carries its soakers and fighters in hotbars, not in a slow caravan across the map. Deployment happens at the target, not the barn.
  • Hidden wealth. Your breeding core lives in fridges inside the deepest vault room — or off-site entirely. Raiders who wipe a visible dino pen may miss the actual line.
  • Instant defense. Defenders pull counter-dinos out mid-fight — cryo sickness rules permitting — turning a losing doorway fight in seconds.
  • Compact bases. Pre-pod bases needed dino barns the size of stadiums; modern cores can be small, dense, and honeycombed, with the herd in a fridge closet.

The corollary: fridge rooms are the highest-value raid target in the game. Hide them like they're the vault, because they are.

Transfers: how the cluster works

Official servers run in clusters. At obelisks, supply drops, and transmitters you can upload your character, items, and (podded or walked-in) dinos, then download onto another server in the same cluster.

  • Uploads are timed. Uploaded items and dinos sit in a temporary buffer with an expiry (classically 24 hours) — the buffer is a courier, not a bank. Losing track of the timer deletes the cargo.
  • Not everything moves. Clusters restrict certain items and creatures (boss trophies, element in raw form, map-specific creatures — lists vary by network and patch). Rulesets also gate *where* you can move: Small Tribes, standard official, and unofficial networks are separate worlds; see the server types guide.
  • Level caps apply. Dinos above the cluster's max level (450 on classic official settings) are deleted on transfer — deep-bred lines need headroom planning.
  • Cooldowns and caps on character transfers and upload slots exist to slow army teleportation; they define how fast a mega can reinforce.

Transfer-day PvP

Transfers create the cluster's rhythm, and the rhythm creates targets:

  • New-server rushes. When fresh servers open, established tribes transfer in geared characters the moment gates open. Beach bobs and transfer squads fight very different day-ones — know which game you're in.
  • Reinforcement windows. A tribe under siege calls allies from across the cluster; how fast help arrives is bounded by transfer mechanics. Raiders time pushes against it (and watch server population for the arriving wave — a mid-raid surge means the cavalry logged in).
  • Obelisk camping. Transfer points are public and known. Arriving on a hostile server at a camped obelisk with your inventory full of pods is how armies die in queue. Scout arrival servers, arrive during their quiet window, and never carry the whole line in one body.

Risk management rules

  1. Split irreplaceables across trips and carriers. One death should never cost the bloodline.
  2. Fridge redundancy: two fridge sites minimum, one off-base. Raids that find one must not find both.
  3. Respect the timers. Upload expiry, pod charge, transfer cooldowns — put them in your tribe's Discord as standing knowledge, and re-verify after major patches.
  4. Podded ≠ safe. Pods in a raided vault are loot. The only safe line is the one nobody knows exists — opsec beats architecture.
  5. Check your server's house rules. Unofficials freely modify cryo sickness, transfer windows, and upload lists. The mechanics above are the official baseline, not a promise.

FAQ

Can raiders steal my cryopodded dinos?

Yes — pods are items. A raided fridge is a transferred army. That's why fridge-room secrecy outranks almost every other opsec concern.

Why did my transferred dino disappear?

The usual suspects: upload expiry passed, the destination blocked that creature type, or the dino exceeded the level cap. Read the cluster's transfer rules — and always screenshot valuable uploads.

Are cryopods allowed everywhere?

Availability and behavior vary by ruleset and patch — some networks restrict when pods can be *thrown* (combat timers), others tune sickness. The tribe's home cluster rules and server Discord are the source of truth.
